Research incomplete
For My Media Project I have decided
to Choose Brief 1.
For this brief I want to pick the two
main tasks which are:
The Broadcast Brief- Make a 3min clip
on a scene in your film
The Print Brief- Making a 2 or 3 page
Booklet based around your film and your film company
MOVIE LOGO RESEARCH
The Metro Goldwyn
Mayer media company logo has many different aspects to it. For example it has a
lion called ‘Leo the Lion’ as a mascot for the company to show that it is a
brave company and it is not afraid to take any risks when coming up with ideas
to make new films. The logo also has a wheat kind of shape at the center bottom
to show that it is a natural film company always coming up with fresh ideas.
The Film role represents this being a ‘Film Company’ and it is the colour gold
to show it is a premium make, it is a film company which has class. The word
‘Trademark’ is also made clear to show that there is no movie company that come
close to this one because of the golden premium feel that it has to it.
The font in the
‘Trademark’ writing is all capital which show that they feel strongly on the
uniqueness of their company so when people see it they know straight away that
there watching a movie which is to be taken seriously. For the actual film
company name the designers decided to put every first letter of the word into a
capital, this is to make people recognize the film companies shorter name ‘MGM’
The
Marvel logo is a fairly simplistic one. It has a
red background within a red box with Marvel in white bold. They
used the colour red to signify the main emotions of the books which are love, anger,
passion and the fact that blood is red and in the comics there is a lot of
bloodshed.
The Logo
is big and bold and that is the main focus which draws the attention of the
viewer watching it. The font is big and stands straight with no curls or kinks
to show that the company stands tall and strong just like a super-hero.
The Logo
also does not over complicate itself because it only uses solid colours which
makes the logo straight forward and not hard to look at however it also makes
it very basic yet the audience still know that they are watching an action
bloody movie
The
Paramount logo has stars to symbolise their content as out of this world, this
tells the viewer that they are about to watch a well-established film because
of the sheer popularity when it comes to this film company. The Stars and the
writing being placed on top of the mountain with clouds shown is to show that
the company is at the top and that they never settle to be at the bottom. At
the bottom they advertise the company that made paramount pictures possible so
that it gives the company some viewership of all the people watching the movie.
The font
of the ‘Paramount’ is all joined together neat and old fashioned, this shows
that the company has class and that they have been running for a long time so
they are very experienced when producing movies so the viewer intentionally
knows he is watching a movie made by a film company which know what they are
doing
LOGO DESIGN PROCESS
This was my first logo I designed
which is very basic, but does not look that professional because of how much is
going on in the logo. I used the theatre mask with the letter A on top of the
face because my brand was meant to be called aperture films. I put the camera
recorder on to show that I have an independent film company.
My second
logo shows a film reel. The reason I chose a film reel is because it tells my
intended audience what kind of company we are and what we produce. The letter A
can be seen inside the film reel, this is so I get across just a taste of what
my film company name is and what the first letter is, the other reason why I put A was because it was the first letter
of the alphabet so the audience think that my film company comes first. I made
the film reel gold from the inspiration of the MGM logo to show it is of gold
standard.
The final
logo which I made is when I decided to switch up my ideas completely, I went
for the name ‘eminence’ because I want my company to be different to all the
rest because of how big the storylines are, I chose this type of font to show
the sharpness of the company and the star to show that we have up and coming
film stars staring in our films and added the silhouette of a man with a gun to
his head to symbolise a gangster because that is the speciality of movies which
my company makes. I used a red bar code to symbolise blood and that you have to
pay a price.
BREIF 1 PART 1
For brief
one part 1 I have picked broadcasting which asks me to make a 3 minute scene on
movie for ‘The Little Picture house’. From the seven topics which were given to
me by the brief I have chosen ‘urban life’. The reason why I have chosen this
is because I want to do a gangster like based movie because I feel I live in a
generation where street and gang related crime have become more and more common
and see it more on the news so I would like to show my interpretation on the
controversial side of what the media does not reveal.

I also asked
50 random people in town what topic sounds the most intriguing and these are
the results:
As you can
see over 30% of people said that they thought Urban Life is quite an
interesting topic which shows that it is a product that people will pay to see and
watch.
For me to
get a better understanding I will study famous gangster and mobster film clips
and look at:
·
Camera
shots used
·
Sound
and video editing used
·
How
they create/ tension /motion/ atmosphere
·
Location
My two clips I have chosen are both gangster movies, one
being an old classic one being quite new. I have done this so I can see how
film making has changed in the past 30 odd years.
CLIP 1
The clip
starts out with a straight on or at eye ranking level, the scene opens up with
this because it wants the audience to view the characters facial expression and
be on the same level as them which makes the viewer feel the same as what the
subject is feeling in the clip.
The camera
then moves in a time-lapse but instead of cutting away it moves right to the
next shot by moving through the walls of each set. This is also an editing
feature since it show 3 consecutive different shots without cutting to a new
scene. This can be useful because it make the scene much more fluid and you get
an idea of what each character is up to without taking up a lot of time. The
scene also has music playing in the background whilst this scene is going on
which makes the viewer more intrigued to the story and more excited when
viewing the scene since the music is quite upbeat and it show the main
character doing exercise in sync with the music.
It then cuts
to a bird’s eye view of the main character getting filed to leave the prison,
this is to look down at the character and make him feel inferior due to the
high angle making him look small. It does this so it tells the audience that
people which go to prison aren’t always big and bad.
Clip 2
In this
scene there is a tense atmosphere because the scene teases the viewer to think
if he is going to kill them or isn’t he going to kill them. This technique
build up tension because we movie watchers want to see the outcome of what is
going to happen to the two people the character is planning on killing. The
scene makes us feel sympathetic toward the character by putting the camera eye
level with a sad innocent emotion on his face which makes us feel like he is
too innocent to get the gun, the scene then cuts to the character trying to get
the gun from the toilet which he had hidden earlier on and then it shows the
character struggling to find it which creates tension and the audience
automatically raise questions about where the gun had gone which also makes the
viewer panic. This teaches me that raising a problem in a film makes the
viewers more self-involved since it automatically turns into a puzzle of ‘How
can the character get out of this situation’.
After the
Character finds the gun he then goes to meet his other two opponents and then
sits down with them at the table, the camera then goes to a low angle shot of
the character to make him look dominant and in the background you then hear a train
going past with the heartbeat tone to build up tension whilst the character
makes the decision to kill him or not.
BREIF 1 PART 2
For Brief 1
part 2 I have decided to do the ‘Print’ work. What this means is that I am
going to create two or three pages for the promotional booklet of my film. The
reason I have chosen to do this is because I want to show my media skill by
producing something that you can hold which means I will have to be much more practical
using real word materials and also be able to work on my product more
aesthetically and be able to use real world techniques to overcome my problems
by creating this booklet such as maths to get the measuring right. When
creating these pages I need them to be visually stunning so the audience which I
am trying to reach out to will be attracted to my film product.
As well as putting information about my film,
I will be putting information about my film company also so the audience knows
what type of movies we make and what we have planned for the future. To prepare
for this I will look at 2 different types of film promotional booklets and
looking at what they do to get the audience’s attention.
My booklet
will be:
·
Colourful
·
Full
of pictures from the movie
·
Have
pictures from future projects
·
Have
information on our film company
·
What
makes our company different
·
Our
film company logo
This is an amateur no profit film company page which tells the viewer what
their company does, what kind of films they make etc. They have decided to go
very casual when designing this page. This also shows information regarding
anyone who is interested to get started in film.
I picked this certain page beacause my company is also
independent and I would like to get other people involved who want to create a
movie have experience because I will then have more ideas to put into the movie
and the other people can promote my movie.
All of the pictures show movie productions off set
instead of on set showing they are more about the production of the film and
practical skills sinstead of boasting how great there movies look.
The company name ‘SoFat’ is a very memorable company
name due to the histrerical nature of the name, this shows that the company
shows that it has a comedy aspect which brings the people interested in comedy
attaracted to the company.
This Booklet
is from the film Harry Potter, it tells us about the actor that plays the
character ‘Snape’. It tells the reader who he plays what his role is in the
harry potter universe and facts about the actor, it tells us what he feels
about the film and his interview when going for the part as Snape.
The layout
of the page is concise and clean yet has a lot of extra writing going into the
background and some of it is only writing that diehard fans will get but will
make people who do not watch the films question themselves and seem more
interested in the film and for those people it also provides photos of the scene
in the movie and to fans shows pictures of scenes which they have never seen
before in the movie which makes the want to read more about what the actors
have done offset.
It also
reels people in my showing off the characters in the movie which readers might
be aware off such as showing a picture of the actress Maggie Smith which has
been in many different movies and is on the popular TV show Downtown Abby which
gives people a familiar face to look at and attracts her fans to the movie as
well.
What is the film
going to be about?
The Film is about a young boy who borrows some money off the
local loan sharks to pay for his university fund and then after creates many
enemies by hanging out with the wrong crowd. He is £5000 short when it’s time
to pay back the loan sharks and the 3 other gangs want to get him, what is he
going to do?
Camera angles are very important in capturing film scenes
because in makes the viewer see the scene in a different perspectives so the
audience can interpret it differently.
